Having met in a garage in their New Jersey hometown in 2014, The Vaughns, consisting of Anna Lies and Ryan Kenter, return with a brand new track titled “Gizzards.” Engineered and produced by Joe Reinhart of Hop Along, “Gizzards,” with its jittery post-punk swagger and equally colorful music video directed by Steve Marcario, is the first taste of the band’s forthcoming full-length for Equal Vision Records.
While penning the lyrics ‘Left, right, back to the middle’, Lies imagined a boxing scene and the frustration of going back and forth with someone. “I didn’t want to overthink this one and let it flow naturally,” Lies recalls. “Once I came up with the ‘fist keeps coming down’ line, I realized I was writing about feelings of oppression. ‘Gizzards’ became more about persevering when you feel like you are being pushed around or boxed in and a powerful reminder that ‘you can be what you want.’ Lies adds, “Sometimes songs happen like that — you aim for one thing and they come out another way.” Watch the music video for “Gizzards” on YouTube HERE, and stream the track on all platforms HERE.
Containing elements of both the dreamy indie-pop and the effortlessly cool surf-rock/power-pop hybrid they made their own on previous releases, the forthcoming music from The Vaughns is looked upon by the band as a vessel to express their innermost emotions in more depth than ever before. Exploring their limits, the result is a record that’s both a continuation of their past and a brand new beginning, one which builds off the legacy they’ve already asserted for themselves while simultaneously marking The Vaughns as one of the most exciting, interesting and original indie-pop bands around today. This is them in their purest, most complete form — with all the toppings. Stay tuned for more music and information on the band’s forthcoming album on Equal Vision Records in the coming weeks.
